iPhone Stuck in Recovery Mode: Revive, Update or Restore

Recovery mode offers three different operations that look similar and have completely different consequences for your data.

Update vs Restore

'Update' reinstalls iOS and keeps user data. 'Restore' erases the device and installs a clean system. On a machine with data, restore is the last option, never the first.

Error codes as directions, not verdicts

Codes such as 4013, 9 or 14 point to USB communication, power delivery or storage I/O. They do not identify a part to replace. Work the layers: cable and port, then power, then board.

When it is hardware

If the device drops out of recovery mode at the same point every time, or shows NAND-related errors, stop software attempts and move to board-level diagnosis. Repeated restore attempts waste the best chances.

FAQ

Will 'Update' delete my data?

No, it is designed to preserve user data; it can still fail and leave the device in recovery mode.

Can a white-screen boot loop be fixed without data loss?

Often, if the cause is firmware-level; board faults need repair first.

Do I need the passcode for a data extraction?

Yes, for any logical extraction. DFU operations do not require it but restore erases the device.

Boundary: once a restore completes, the data is gone. Everything before that is a judgement call about which operation is safe.
