Apple Silicon Macs: Why the SSD Cannot Be Read Off the Board

An Apple Silicon Mac does not have a removable disk with a controller. It has NAND dies soldered to the board, addressed by the SoC and encrypted with keys held in the Secure Enclave.

Architecture

The SSD controller is integrated into the SoC; capacity is set by the number and size of NAND packages. There is no separate controller to bypass and no way to address the NAND without the SoC.

What recovery actually looks like

Repair the board until the machine boots — power rails, NAND supply, corroded joints — then image the volume through the OS. DFU 'revive' reinstalls firmware while keeping data; 'restore' erases. Choosing restore on a machine with data is the single most common fatal mistake.

Backups are the only other path

Time Machine, iCloud Desktop & Documents, or a Migration Assistant copy. Without one, a dead SoC means the data is gone.

FAQ

Can NAND be transplanted to another board?

Not reliably: keys and pairing live in the SoC/SEP, not in the NAND.

Does revive always keep data?

It is designed to; restore does not. Always confirm which operation the tool proposes.

What about T2 Macs?

Same conclusion: keys in the T2. Board-level repair first, then logical extraction.

Boundary: if the SoC or Secure Enclave is damaged and there is no backup, recovery is not possible — by design, not by tooling.
